Quarter - Mile Farms started the winter of 2010. Driving across country in mid December with 3 horses, 3 cats and a dog, we left North Carolina and landed in Michigan the 15th of December. A couple of years later we ended up with our first goat Allie with the intent of trying goat milk and dabbling in cheese making. Fast forward a couple of years and I meet my mentor and great friend who just so happens to breed the same breed as us. A friendship was formed and we were introduced to DHIR and Appraisal. It exploded from there.
Our milking herd averages around 25 with the bulk of our does under the age of 3. We are an ADGA Plus herd and have been CAE, CL, and Johnes NEG for years. Results will be updated again once all does have freshened. We are on OS40/AR and our does milk for at least 240 days a year. We are a host herd yearly for Appraisal (Current NEG herd testing required) as well as host buck collections in the fall. We have recently added Artifical Insemination into our program and have had great success so far utilizing this tool.
Our kids are always pulled at birth and fed heat treated colostrum and milk from day one. They are soon transitioned onto a 'Suckit Bucket' and are fed pretty much all they can eat. Our kids are on a coccidia prevention program by day 10 and corresponding medicated creep feed is offered at a week old. 2nd cut alfalfa/grass is offered free choice at that time as well. I bucket feed my kids until 6 months or they self wean. This leads to healthy thriving kids.
